Early Days<\/span><\/h2>\n

Born in 1942 in Canary Islands, Spain, Manolo Blahnik had a Czech father and a Spanish mother whose family owned a banana plantation where he and his little sister grew up. As a child, Manolo\u2019s first exposure to footwear designing was seeing his mother \u2014 a fashionable woman \u2014 design her shoes with the help of a local cobbler. Subsequently, Manolo, too, in all his childhood innocence, started making shoes using the aluminum wrappers of his chocolate candies for the lizards that roamed around in his garden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He went to the University of Geneva to study Politics and Law, honoring his parent\u2019s wish for him to become a diplomat. However, he abandoned the subject after the first semester to instead major in Literature and Architecture. Eventually, his interest in art took him to Paris, where he studied set design at the Louvre Art School and became close friends with renowned jewelry designer Paloma Picasso. In 1969, Manolo shifted to London and started working at Zapata, which is a known London boutique, and later at <\/span>Vogue Italia <\/span><\/i>as a writer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But, things really perked up in 1970 when Manolo Blahnik took a short trip to New York and made an acquaintance with the then editor-in-chief of American <\/span>Vogue, <\/span><\/i>Diana Vreeland. On seeing some of his set and theatrical designs, she aptly noticed Manolo\u2019s prowess in designing shoes. It was her who encouraged him to pursue footwear designing as a full-time occupation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He became the first male to be featured on the cover of <\/span>Vogue <\/span><\/i>magazine in 1974.
