From Our Land: 4 Top Middle Eastern Designers

In recent years, famous designers such as Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad have been on the top covet list for the red carpet and their glamorous runways have been awaited with bated breath.

We take a look at some of the best Middle Eastern Designers who have been creating waves every season with vibrant collections and hold some of the most successfully acclaimed shows during fashion weeks.


Elie Saab

Elie Saab, known as the King of Evening Wear worldwide, has created some of the most sensual gowns for celebrities and royalties.

He is a self-made Lebanese designer who started designing since a very young age. He is also the first non-Italian fashion designer to become a member of the Italian Camera Nazionale della Moda.


His evening wear and wedding gown designs are showcased worldwide and consist of delicate fabrics, lace, detailed embroidery, pearls, crystals and silk threads.

One of the most popular dresses by Elie Saab was a dress worn by Queen Rania for her enthronement. The diamond and emerald embroidered dress reportedly sold for $2.4 million.

Zuhair Murad

Zuhair Murad is from Baalbek, Lebanon. He started sketching his fantasy dresses at the age of ten. He managed to open his first store in Beirut in 1997 and celebrated his international debut at the Alta Roma Fashion Week. He even presented his Haute Couture Collection in Paris 2001!


Needless to say, his designs were a smashing success with the front row and critics, and he hasn’t looked back since. The Zuhair Murad Fashion House in Lebanon now consists of an 11 story building where the magic happens. His pieces are mostly evening wear and wedding gowns with intricate embroidery and soft sultry fabrics or a mix of Chantilly and tulle.


Reem Acra


Reem Acra is a Lebanese designer who reached the pinnacle of success with her eponymous bridal gowns that were launched in 1997. Gaining inspiration from her hometown and studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, she is a master of fabrics and tailoring.


Acra is known for her ability to fashion a dress to express the personality of the person and has global icons as her clientele. Her collections are distinctly modern with aesthetic designs and sharp, flawless construction with detailed embroidery in lush colors.

 Hussein Chalayan


Turkish designer Hussein Chalayan who is famous for his bold and exogenous designs, was a student at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. His graduate collection consisted of clothing that were buried in the backyard and exhumed before presentation, this was meant to represent the urban decay of a life cycle.


His designs integrate science, architecture and technology into the collection as well as inspirations from music and cinema; his catwalks are often referred to as performances rather than shows.
